Do I need to be vegan, believe in Buddha and do esoteric stuff to practice yoga? Wait what…
Let me get straight to the point. First time I ever heard about Yoga, all I was thinking is vegans, buddha and some third eye movement. We’ve all been there and maybe even thought about it. There is nothing wrong with that, it’s just many are not willing to try it because of that.
Many believe you needed to twist yourself into a pretzel, be flexible like rubber, eat salads all day, and sing under the full moon to get into yoga. Let’s clear out the top three myths and have a little chat about what yoga really is.
First up, the big and flexible question:
1. Do I need to be flexible like a rubber band to do yoga?
No. Yoga is not about doing those fancy poses on day one or ever, really. It’s about finding your moment and improving yourself step by step. Flexibility? That comes with time, but it’s not the ticket to start.
I was hard like a rock when I begun doing yoga for the first time. And honestly, I wanted to quit every damn day. But I kept going, and many sessions later I am more flexible than a newborn baby. And guess what? I feel better like never before. I may be biased a bit because I do run a studio for that. But hey. This yoga thing does some miracles if you stick with it. Really. Well, it doesn’t give you a third eye, but you get the point :)
Next, the big and juicy one:
2. Do I need to be vegan to practice Yoga? Or do I need to become one?
Wait what? No! Well, not exactly. While yoga encourages kindness and many other things, it doesn’t hand out a diet chart. Whether you’re into veggies or love your steak, there’s room for you on the yoga mat. It’s not about what you eat, but more about showing up for yourself and moving. Moving towards stronger mind and body.
Now, onto the Buddha and esoteric vibes.
3. Do I need to swap my Netflix for spiritual texts and begin reading horoscopes into the stars?
Nope. Yoga is a much more easy going practice than you think. It’s got roots in ancient wisdom, sure. But today, it’s more about connecting with yourself, not necessarily following a specific belief system.
For example, every time you join one of our sessions we encourage you to no force certain movements. We ask you to listen to your body and move as you feel. It’s about finding that balance and progressing slowly.
You may be right about some things though…
“Wait a second Mr. Author of This Blog Post. But what about all the mystical stuff I hear about?" It’s true. Yoga can dive deep into the spiritual world. But there’s also a different part. You can totally get the physical benefits and mindfulness without going full mystical mode. So no need to suddenly walk on clouds. It’s your choice.
Here is the deal — Yoga is flexible
Sometimes it is more stretchy. Sometimes more relaxed. Sometimes it gets more energetic and physical. And sometimes more relaxed and mindful. It’s not about your diet, your beliefs, or how flexible you can be. It’s about taking a moment for yourself, exploring what feels good, and growing at your own pace.
Yoga is this amazing journey that’s open to everyone – meat-lovers, skeptics, the not-so-flexible folks, and everyone in between. It’s about finding balance, peace, and maybe even a bit of fun along the way.
It offers more than you may think
Living in the TikTok era, we’re all about quick fixes and continuous scrolling. But yoga offers something lasting – a way to chill, stretch, and connect with what matters — you. And you don’t need to be anything other than what you are right now to start. Really. All you need is just sign up for a class (no matter where) and start. You can start with a YouTube video, or join a place. Like us :P
So, how about giving it a try? Roll out a mat, keep an open mind, and just see where it takes you. Who knows, you might just find your zen... or at least a new way to relax.
